Kathryn Stephens

I met Peter when I was working my first job at his local bookstore in Toronto. Over the years we struck up good conversation about reading—his recommendations always welcome- and what the week held. One particular weekend morning as I was ringing through his New York Times, he asked me how I was and I answered honestly, that I was not very happy at the store anymore and didn’t know what to do next with an arts degree that seemed to fit nowhere. He nodded and listened for a bit and left. The next week, he came in and immediately suggested I apply to Cirque du Soliel to “get out of town” and be outlandish. A few months later, I ended up following the spirit of that idea into work that brought me great experiences well out of the city. The lovely oddity of Peter's original suggestion has stuck with me ever since and I so appreciate his lesson of looking beyond the usual bounds of what is comfortable to see what running away with the circus might bring.
