Life Story for Peter Gerard Kavanagh

Peter Gerard Kavanagh
Peter Gerard Kavanagh
June 12, 1953 – September 7, 2016
Died suddenly of complications from cancer. Born in Deep River, Ontario, Peter studied at both St. Thomas University and Dalhousie Law School. He found his calling in journalism and his work home at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation where he was a television and radio producer known for his erudition and creativity. He started Canada Reads, worked on programs such as The Journal, Morningside and The Sunday Edition before retiring in 2013. Peter is the author of The Man Who Learned to Walk Three Times, a memoir of rising to the many medical challenges he faced. Peter suffered polio as an infant and came to know hospitals and pain far too intimately but was always curious about life and grateful for it.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Debi Goodwin and adored daughter Jane and by loving siblings Mary McCurdy, Kathy Martin, John Kavanagh, Paul Kavanagh and their families.
Thank you to the staff at the Juravinski Cancer Clinic and St. Joseph’s Hospital, both of Hamilton.
A memorial will be held at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library at 10 Anderson Lane on October 15 at 5:30 p.m. Donations may be made in his name to the library through their website or to a new lakeside park in town that Peter was involved in: The Peter Kavanagh Memorial Fund, Harmony Residents Group, P.O. Box 1267, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, L0S 1J0. The fund will go to trees and a tribute to Peter in the park
