Life Story for Alice Mary Fleming (McConaghy)

Alice Mary (McConaghy) Fleming died quietly, with family present on Thursday, March 6, 2014. Predeceased by husband and life companion J Y Fleming (2011) she leaves a great legacy of kindness, and love to those she touched in life. Sadly missed by daughters Marie Alice Barr, and Rachel Joan Fleming, and sons Gordon Ray (Karen) Fleming and Morley Charles (Valerie) Fleming, her Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their extended families and a wealth of friends. Born the eldest of six children to a pioneering family June 6, 1922 at Echo Hill, Alta, her early life in northern Alberta gave her strength of character and a love of church and family life. Alice is a veteran of World War II in the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division and as an Air Force wife there were many stories she could tell. She was a founder/member of Meals on Wheels in Niagara, active in the United Church of Canada, especially in Explorers, Sunday School, and UCW. Community Care will miss the many pairs of colorful mittens she knitted over her years in St Catharines. She was a loving wife and mother, accomplished cook and artist, advocate for justice for the less fortunate, faithful friend, and opened her arms and her heart to all. The family thank her friends and caregivers at Chartwell Niagara (Chateau Gardens) Nursing Home for their love and care and especially to Kay, Joanne, Michelle, and Shelley, Thank you also to the many friends who visited, called and offered of support during her final days. A Memorial service will be held at Grace United Church, Victoria Street, Niagara-on-the-lake, Ont on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11:00 am. Cremation and Interment has already taken place. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Grace United Church; Start Me Up Niagara, 17 Gale Cres, St Catharines, Ont; Alzheimer’s Society/charity of your choice.
