Condolence From: Harry Huizer
Condolence: A year has gone by so quickly but my memories of Al and Vera will not be forgotten. Their influence in our lives remain. Al set the example for each of us in how we should treat each other. His kindness, friendliness, faith and sense of humour were the qualities that made him special. Of course he was also a very talented golfer which added to his fame! We were all blessed to have known Al.

Condolence From: Peter & Sue Chaqpman
Condolence: Dear Mark & your family, With sincere & tremendous sadness we send our thoughts to you on the passing of one of our favourite gentleman in town. Al was a delight! His dedication to Heart & Stroke each year was indeed stoic & respected. Over the years his annual Heart & Stoke visits & our telephone chats brought us closer. We felt his loneliness in Feb. with the long cold winter season after the loss of your mother & his darling Vera. There will always be a special place in our heart for Al. Peter & Sue Chapman

Condolence From: Deb Grieve (Reid)
Condolence: Please accept my sincere condolences. I had the pleasure of meeting Al in August 2015 when my father Arnold Reid passed away. Al was delightful as he shared many golfing memories that he and my dad had together when they were just kids. I learned a great deal and still smile at some of the crazy stories. I really did appreciated everything he shared and I know he was an important person in my father's life.

Condolence From: Laurie Gunton and Peter Barry
Condolence: Mark and family, We are so sad to hear about the passing of your dad. He was truly one of a kind. Your parents were neighbours on Gate to my Mom for over 30 years. The number of times we enjoyed talking to your dad, and told him he was working too hard fixing the fence, cutting the grass and/or working in the garden and his response would be "when are you guys going to retire?" Allans work ethic certainly rubbed off on us. Our family will always remember your parents helping our Mom on so many occasions. Their kindness and concern was never forgotten. We both would have liked to have been there this weekend, but unfortunately we have another commitment. Take care and we'll be thinking of you on Saturday.

Condolence From: Elsie and Larry Larose
Condolence: As you deal with this most unpleasant of life’s facts, our thoughts are with you, Mark. Although saddened by his passing, we recognize that our lives are fuller for having known him; He features in many of our best memories of the Club. His inclusive friendliness made everyone, especially new members, feel welcome; His easy-going charm and classy, self-effacing observations on his myriad accomplishments endeared him to all. In a sense he was the heart of the NOTL Golf Club. He was certainly its finest Ambassador and will remain with you, as a Club legend. Elsie and Larry Larose

Condolence From: Dick and Diane Armstrong
Condolence: Diane and I want to send our deepest condolences to Mark and Al's family. We will never forget how welcoming Al and Vera were to us when we moved to NOTL from Nova Scotia in 2009. We met Al and Vera when we joined Grace United Church. I was always impressed with Al's service in WW II. Even to the last, Al always had a firm handshake and a warm smile when we met. We felt honored to be one of Al's friends.

Condolence From: Bill and Moira McEachern
Condolence: Al was a wonderful friend both on the golf course and across the bridge table. In all the years we knew him I never saw him angry at anyone although a few times his driver and putter felt his displeasure. From when I first met him at the bridge club his first question after shaking hands was "do you play golf?" What a guy, he will certainly be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Mark and family please accept our heartfelt condolences at your loss. Bill and Moira

Condolence: My condolences to Alan Derbyshire's family. My late wife Ruth and I knew Alan and Vera through Grace United Church and the NOTL Golf Club, where Al was a fixture and a pleasure to chat with. His remembrances of time spent in WWII were both significant and always told with a very human touch. May he rest in peace.

Condolence From: Chris Yakymishen
Condolence: I was so hoping to see Al walking on the golf course this year. I saw him a few weeks ago and he was looking fantastic. As usual we had a lovely conversation. I couldn’t help but sense that he was feeling alone in the house especially in the evenings. It just wasn’t the same anymore. It was such a pleasure to see Al’s lovely smiling face during the vignette at the movies a few weeks ago. He will well and truly be missed by so many people. I know you are so proud of both your parents Mark and will miss them both. I am so sorry for your loss.

Condolence From: Larry Mantle
Condolence: Shortly after moving to NOTL I had the privilege of playing golf with Al at WOOFs. Learning we had come from London, Al related a great little story about how, when he was posted in England during WW2 and had some free time one day, he wandered over to the local golf club. He chatted up the pro, who loaned Al his own set of clubs and let him play the course. Great golfer, great gentleman. We will all miss him.

Condolence From: Marlene & Darryl Fry
Condolence: Al was simply precious to everyone he met. He sort of adopted me in 1999 when I moved into NOTL and went to the golf course for my first round. He asked if I was looking for a game and invited me to play in his 3 some - I think Jimmy Brown was also with him. He did not ask where I lived or where I was from or what I did for a living or what my handicap was. It only took a few holes for me to discover that he was special. After the round he took me into the pro shop to meet the staff and I joined the club. He was like the great golf teacher Harvey Penick who said "if you play golf you are my friend" It wasn't too long after that day that Marlene and I were sitting behind him and Vera as members of the Grace United Church and he was taking us around introducing us to the congregation. Al was the epitome of a Community Legend. Marlene and I would like to send our deepest sympathy to Mark and family and all of Al's many friends

Condolence: We would like to send our condolences to the family on the loss of such a super man. Incredibly Al left a message on our machine at just after noon on the 14th asking when it would be convenient to drop by and pick the cheque for our annual donation to the Heart & Stroke. So vibrant to the end. R.I.P. Al.
