A Remarkable Friend

Roger, and Joan, gave us the incomparable gifts of unstinted friendship and humour, gifts that we have come to value greatly over the past few years as we have had the opportunity to get to know this remarkable couple and call them friends.

Roger was always unstintingly generous, with his time, his advice and his tools! He could be counted on to have just the thing needed, tucked away in his elaborate workshop. In spite of the apparent mess and disorder, Roger invariably knew exactly where the item in question could be found (or who might have it out on-loan!).

Roger also shared his gardening know-how. I remember one year when he insisted that I plant leeks (“You have to plant leeks!”). When I pointed out that I did not have the space, he dropped off several dozen seedlings that he had started in order to ensure that I put them in the ground. He had already ascertained, that like him, I would be unable to discard a perfectly good plant. He got me hooked on leeks. Roger enjoyed both the early radishes and rhubarb coming from our garden. We had fun teasing each other about the quality, as well as the time of appearance of produce in our mutual gardens. He gave me seeds for his favourite tomatoes that I have since labelled “Roger’s Red”, tomatoes that I continue to plant, harvest and enjoy.

Over the past two years Roger was instrumental in designing and helping to build our new greenhouse, which now graces the east side of our garage. Whenever we enjoy the greenhouse we will think of Roger.

He scrounged key materials including large dual pane windows (from a building reno in Toronto), a skylight of unknown age from Kijiji, and used, rigid foam insulation for under the floor. He persuaded Michel Dupuis to cut a used cedar hydro pole into beautiful 3 by 6s for the frame. In the end, after much nudging and cajoling of Derek to keep working on it, the greenhouse was ready for the 2017 season.

Roger was a genius at finding gently used (and preferably inexpensive) materials. We had tremendous fun on our “garage sailing” outings and I so wish that there had been more of them.
