INKSTER, Roy (Poppa Sam) - Died peacefully at Upper Canada Lodge on Saturday January 11, 2014 at the age of 93. Beloved husband of the late Joyce (2001). Dear father of Brian (Brenda), Gary and Caroline Kindness. Loving grandfather of Kim (Craig), Ken (Colleen), Kellie (Pierre), James and Cory (Danielle). Loving great grandfather of Travis, Eden, Ethan. He is predeceased by a brother Keith and a sister Winnie. Born in 1920 in a small Northern Ontario Town of Dean Lake, Roy grew up like many of us never imagining one day he would go overseas to participate in War times and find his bride to bring home to Canada. He joined 427 in Dec '42 when they were first formed and then posted to 433 squadron. As Radar Mechanic he looked after GEE, H2S and IFF equipment which the Navigators used. Roy met Joyce in Skipton on Swale and was married four months later. Joyce came to Canada in 1946 where they made their life together with their three children. In 1977 Joyce and Roy became actively involved with the Reunions that honored different squadrons each year which was organized by George Sutherland, a former adjutant of 407 and 434 squadrons. It was 427's year to be honored in 1980. Vern White, AI De'on and Roy were 3 of 6 that were invited to form a committee to ask each member of the existing list of 200 to attend. Joyce took charge and the task was challenged. She was energized and persistent in finding as many as possible and increased the list to some 600 candidates of the 427 squadron and over the years extended the list to over 12,000 of all the Canadian Six Group. The ending result was that Joyce & Roy reunited many of the crew men who never knew where and if their friends were still alive. One day Norm Shannon when visiting the Editor of The Air Force Magazine struck up a conversation on who the "The lnksters" were and Norm decided to get a first hand scoop on what they were up to. After a 2 day interview listening to many of their 'happy ending' reunions they were featured in 'esprit de corps' in an article called 'Tracer of Lost Aircrew'. Now one of the last members left of the original squadron, he is proud to know that the tradition is being carried on.
The family will receive friends at MORGAN FUNERAL HOME, 415 Regent Street, Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held in the chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. Cremation will follow. Memorial donations to Upper Canada Lodge, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or The Alzheimer's Society of Niagara would be appreciated by the family.
